BUSHFIRES – Girl Trapped by Flames
Farmers Serious Losses – ALBURY, Saturday
Very serious bushfires raged in the Upper Murray district during the past two days. A girl was badly burnt. Thousands of acres of grass was destroyed, holdings on the rich flats were swept and as a result many landholders suffered serious losses.
At Walwa the most serious blaze was on Mr Percy Thorburne’s property a few miles from Walwa. Starting yesterday afternoon and aided by a strong breeze the flames laced through the dry grass burning fencing and timber to Mr A Thorburne’s paddocks. A great fight was put up to save the homestead. Two large sheds were burned. The fire then spread along both sides of the main Upper Murray road. It soon reached the property of Mr B Mann and here too a great fight was put up to save the home.
By the time the fire had reached Mr T Coysh’s Pine Mount property it had covered a wide area and as the strength of the wind increased the situation became grave. Miss Irene Coysh was at home with her mother and father and as they were unable to cope with the outbreak, they harnessed a pony in their sulky and fled before the flames. They made for Mr A Thorburne’s home where the girl was trapped and surrounded by the flames which leapt high into the air. She had no escape from they as they extended for some distance all around her. Fire fighters arrived just in time to save her from being burned to death. She was hurried to Corryong Hospital suffering from severe burns to the head, arms and legs and from shock. It is reported that Mr Coysh’s home, which is situated in heavily timbered country, was destroyed. Losses of fencing, outhouses and grass were considerable.
The outbreak was the most serious on the Upper Murray this summer. About 500 acres of grass and a considerable quantity of fencing valed at 250 pounds were destroyed when a fire broke out on Rockwood, the property of Mr Alex Mair MLA, 10 miles from Albury. Other fires occurred at Mundaroo and Jingellic.

A report from Walwa states that the most serious blaze was on Mr Percy Thornburne’s property, a few miles from Walwa. Starting on Friday, and aided by a strong wind, the flames raced through the dry grass, burning fencing and timber, and a great fight was made to prevent the homestead from being destroyed. Two large sheds were burned.
As the fire spread towards Mr Tom Coysh’s Pine Mount property, Mr Coysh, his wife and daughter, Irene, not being in a position to cope with the blaze, harnessed a pony in their sulky and fled before the flames. They made for Mr Thornburne’s property, where the girl was trapped in opening a gate. The flames, which surrounded her, leapt high into the air.
