CLEARING SALE AT GHIN GHIN

Messrs E Smith & Co held a clearing sale for Mr A Patton, at Ghin Ghin, on Thursday last.  There was a large attendance of buyers, and spirited bidding, everything being cleared at good prices.  Horses fetched up to 15 pounds, 10 shillings, ponies, up to 14 pounds 15 shillings, working bullocks, 7 pounds, 15 shillings each, milking cows, up to 7 pounds, 5 shillings, young stock, up to 44 shillings, and pigs, 30? shillings each.

The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, Tuesday 30 June 1885
The Seymour correspondent of the Melbourne Age reports that at the police court there on Tuesday T. G. Brent was charged with illegally obtaining the sum of £8 14s Gd from the person of Alexander Patton, a farmer, residing at Ghin Ghin. From the evidence for the prosecution, which was of a contradictory nature, it appeared that Patton called at the Treasury to pay a half-year’s rental on a selection owned by his mother. He obtained a receipt for the amount from the officer, who, however, shortly afterwards discovered that he had not received the money. He immediately called on Patton and stated that he had not been paid the money for which he had given the receipt, but Patton maintained that he had paid the money.

He was then requested by Brent to count the money into his hand, which he did, Brent retaining the sum for which he had given the receipt. Mr. G. G. Fox, manager of tin Bank of Victoria, gave evidence to the effect that he was present during the whole time, and that no money passed between the two parties. After hearing the whole of the evidence, the Bench held that the charge was not sustained, and dismissed the case.

Alexander Patton 1902

Fatal Accident: On Monday night Messrs Cooper Davis and R Barker found a man named Alexander Patton, a well known Alectown selector, suspended by his foot from the stirrup of his horse’s saddle at a spot about 5 miles from Parkes along the Alectown road.  Patton was in an unconscious condition, and they removed him from his perilous position, and whilst one remained to watch, the other rode into town and informed the police.  Constable Luckman at once set out with a vehicle for the scene of the accident and conveyed the body to the Hospital, where Dr Johnson was in immediate attendance.  Despite medical skill, however, poor Patton never recovered consciousness, and died on Wednesday morning.  All particulars of the sad fatality are not known, but it is surmised that deceased must have been dragged for a considerable distance after falling off his horse, and it is marvellous how he escaped from being smashed to a pulp.  Deceased, who is about 50 years of age, leaves a widow and family.  There being no suspicious circumstances, the coroner gave an order for interment, and will hold an inquiry today.
